Board walk on the Waitonga Falls Track - Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand
Waitonga Falls is 39m high and is the tallest waterfall in the Tongariro National Park.
The Waitonga Falls track starts at a small car park at the top end of Mountain Road and the start of the track is clearly marked. The track starts off crossing a well built bridge before a 20 minute gentle climb through alpine beach forest on a well established track to roughly the halfway point. At this point the track opens up on top subalpine terrain with a board walk which weaves through it before making a decent down to the Waitonga Falls. The viewing point of the falls is somewhat back from the falls but there are what looks like rough tracks where people can get closer to the bottom, we didn’t try with our young family. We really enjoyed this walk as board walk section broke the journey, the falls where beautiful even though there was not much water at this time of year and it was a good distance and time and not too short.
